I like Billy’s suggestion, much more secure and elegant 😀

Gary is correct --- but you could hookup a cheap laptop connect to the console port (USB to serial converter) - then use TeamViewer or any share desktop you prefer.

Subject: Re: [HP3000-L] Remote Console

Hi Chuck

Many years back HP sold a device that was basically a hacked jet direct box that allowed a ‘secure’ (lets not get into the semantics of how easy it would have been to hack :-) ) solution that provided a managed access port.

But that actually worked really well and allowed IP access into it.

The other method as you say is a modem on the remote support port set to auto answer and this will definitely work, for me it was more about controlling access to the console remotely. I recall one site that had a modem with a remote call back to a known inbound number that was effective. On answer you were prompted for a U and P that had a dial back associated with it.

Ultimately its all down to risk and your appetite.

Cheers

Gary
