(I don't recall the type of HP3000 you have or the version of MPE, no that
it matters too much on this question, but it usually helps.)
 
This does not work at present.  It is expected to be available in the next
release of MPE/iX (5.5), which is expected to be available in later this year.
 
There are a couple of workarounds, of sorts, until then:
1) For HP Unix, you can purchase the vt3k package that will do a remote
session on the HP3000 using the vitural terminal service (similar to
telnet, but better performance).
2) If you have a DTC, you can purchase a telnet card that fits into
one of the slots. It provide telnet to the HP3000.

telnet from the HP3000 should be available in MPE/iX 5.0, but I don't
recall the path to it (if it is not in .pub.sys).
