There is one alternative: Envoy, but I consider its quality to be abyssmal.

The Internet version of the NY Times is presented in both formats, Acrobat
and Envoy, every day. It is worth the trouble of downloading both (after
you've downloaded the appropriate plugins/readers) and seeing if you agree
that there are striking differences in quality between the two.
