I am not an Orbit expert, but one thing I have learned the hard way.

With Orbit, if the backup is not 100% complete, the whole tape, including the directory is worthless.

With Turbostore, it is possible to recover the files and directory, up to the point of failure... i.e. if the tape failed at 90%, it is still possible to get the first 90% off the tape.  The last 10% can be restore from older, presumably good backup tapes.

Like you, Giles, I'm fuzzy on the Orbit restore, but I think (underline think) there are two files on the front of an ORBIT backup, one being the MPE directory (hopefully) and the other the BACKUPPL program so the tape can be read.

I'd try doing a restore  from the ORBIT backup with a DIRECTORY option with much crossing of fingers.

Subject: Re: [HP3000-L] Backups

Not to worry.

It looks like your backup contains all it needs to be able to recover your system.

HP's advice to you about first restoring the directory ASSUMED your backup was done using the HP STORE command - which of course it was not.

Your backup employed the 3rd-party backup software from Orbit, so your restore procedures need to reflect that.

I don't have the orbit backup manual at hand, but I think your first step would be to restore the Orbit backup/restore program (BACKUPPL.PUB.ORBIT or BACKUPPL.PUB.SYS?) from the full backup tape you had created with the BACKUPPL program.

Please check the manual or contact Orbit.

After that, you simply run BACKUPPL, apply the appropriate commands and you'll be good to go.
