CHICAGO -- An American Airlines flight landed safely at Chicago's O'Hare
International Airport after a passenger apparently tried to break into the
cockpit in mid-flight.

The attack was not terrorist-related, CBS reported. However, two American
F-16s responded and escorted the airliner to O'Hare.

Channel3000.com in Madison and TheMilwaukeeChannel.com received e-mails from
people in Walworth County (near the Illinois-Wisconsin border) who reported
hearing something like "an earthquake or sonic boom" at about 3:15 p.m. CST,
which was actually the sound of the fighter planes.

The suspect was quickly subdued by other passengers, and the man never
gained entry to the cockpit, according to wire reportes.

Airline officials said the suspect, who was not armed, had a history of
mental illness.

The Boeing 767, American Airlines Flight 1238, with 153 aboard, was en route
from Los Angeles International Airport to O'Hare. It landed safely at about
4:30 p.m. EDT.
