Have you looked at the original data in the image dataset on the HP3000 
with something like display functions on?

Had many a battle getting what should have been ASCII data on to another 
platform, when every step of the way yet another tool is attempting to 
do an ASCII conversion, and then when you finally end up looking at the 
results on a PC using yet another native character set the results are 
sometimes strange.

Never underestimate the ability of a user to type something weird into a 
field no matter how much validation you have!
