We've gotten a DDS tape from a system running:
        HP3000 Release: C.50.00 User Version: C.50.00
                MPE/iX HP31900 B.70.06

The tape was written using tar. I'm trying to read it on a HP9000:
    Generic-Sys (generic) [HP Release B.10.01]

Very small files seem to be padded with nulls (which may be okay).
Records in the some of the larger files just seem to stop or be chopped off.

Towards the end, tar on the HP-UX 10.01 system complains with:

Tar: end of tape
Tar: to continue, enter device/file name when ready or null string to quit.

pax does not give any errors and reads the entire archive but the files
exhibit the same problem.

Is the tar reading what is on the tape which means something went wrong
with the writing of the tape?

What is the best native program to use to write tapes that can be read
on the other system?

Yan.
