I don't know the precise answer, but when I first started working on our
KSAM database (10+ years ago) I asked why every file had two slack bytes
at the FRONT of every record. Someone explained that CM ksam used
these two bytes to mark deleted records. I've never bothered to
challenge this standard at my firm - although I have always wondered why
you would want to read deleted records anyway.

However, what I can say is that KSAMXL has a ";REUSE" option - allowing
ksam to re-use space on files. Very useful if you have a file whose
contents are volatile. The natural consequence of this is that you
can't always rely upon being able to retrieve deleted data.

P.s. I have once seen an application abort because KSAM reported back
that the "current record was marked for deletion". And it is possible
to read KSAM files by relative record numbers - in which case (I think)
you can direclty read deleted records but are (at least) warned that the
record is deleted.

Subject: [HP3000-L] KSAMXL Delete Question

When a record is deleted from a KSAMXL file how does the file system
flag this record as being (logically) deleted? -- low-values in the 1st
two bytes of the record, asterisks....??

Inquiring minds want to know...

TIA,
Brian Donaldson.
