We installed them on 5.5 pp6, along with an AutoRAID-specific patch (I don't
remember the patch ID) that was site-specific at the time but is now in
general release, I believe. They will work without the ARM (AutoRAID
Manager) software, but your ability to configure and control them will be
limited, and may cause HP to refuse to support them due to lack of
diagnostic ability. Since the MPE version of the ARM software doesn't run
on 5.5, you would need a separate NT machine with a SCSI controller that is
available only from HP. The HP3000 connects to one of the controllers on
the AutoRAID array, and the NT workstation connects to the other. Because
of the ARM limitation, AutoRAID is only "officially" supported on 6.0, but
they have been known to support AutoRAIDS on 5.5 with ARM running on NT.

You can configure up to 8 LUNs from the front panel or from ARM. The LUN
number is the level on the hardware path that is just below the SCSI ID.
For example, if the SCSI address is 1, and the path to your pseudo device is
8/16.1, the LUNs would be configured as 8/16.1.0, 8/16.1.1, ... 8/16.1.7.
Figure out the total capacity you want the array to have, and the number of
LUNS and divide the space among the LUNs.

Subject: HP AutoRaid and MPE/iX 5.5

Has anyone connected a HP AutoRaid to a HP3000 running MPE/iX 5.5 EXP 4 +
Patches?

We are planning to configure an autoraid containing four nine gig drives
onto
a HP300/977. HP gave us the green light on
compatibility several weeks ago but now they seem to be unsure, they're not
sure if we need to upgrade the O/S to V6.0 !
Apart from requiring more service outage for the upgrade, it would also
invalidate our Y2K testing.

We are aware that the autoraid can only be used for private volumes until
the
upgrade to MPE/iX6.0, when we can configure the
mpexl_system_volume_set on it to boot the system.

Also how are the 'LUNS' configured on the AutoRaid and do we need Armserver
installed as well ?

Thanks in advance for any replies

Steve..
