Perhaps, or perhaps MPE and SPL would have been the 'standards'
if HP had simply given them out in the '70's to universities and to
anyone else as ATT did with  unix  and   c.
A quote from the Bible seems strangely appropriate here,
  'the stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone'.
