2003 Spending:
 $14.6 Billion NASA
$358.2 Billion Department of Defense

Cost of one shuttle launch is about $500 million.

If the odds of a catastrophic failure of a shuttle misson are 2 out of 113 (1.8%),
this is about as dangerous as 1200 recreational skydiving jumps. But it's fairly
safe compared to a WWII bombing mission.
