Indeed there are competing service providers.  It's just that NorthPoint is
the only DSL provider willing to install at the extra long run length
required at my residence (that's why I'm stuck with relatively slow IDSL).
Sprint and Quest keep sending me promotional junk mail, but they won't
install at my location (you'd think they could link their junk mailer
application to the database that determines whether they can actually offer
the product at a specific address.)

The best deal I've seen in town from any provider is AT&T's cable data
service.  Lowest price, 5 free IP addresses with low rates on more, free
installation, $5/month off for each additional service from AT&T (like
digital phone service).  Their phone service costs much less than the
bellco's, too.

My experience with NAPSTER is that download speeds and reliability from a
cable data customer is better than from the average DSL customer.
