I used a college computer centre with an ibm 1130 (they now have an HP3000)
that required the o/s and compiler in card form to precede the little
fortran source deck(s). As I recall, we also used SL/1 (a mini PL/1) in
this same manner.

When the hard disc came, I seem to remember that it was a removable pack
similar to a 7905/7906.

Of course, I also remember the "big" discs on earlier systems at IBM. The
one that fascinated me most was the device that mechanically picked up
squares of magnetic media, wrapped them around a small drum and then
proceeded to read or write data. It was almost as fascinating as the first
2 axis NC machine tools (another story in another life)!
