My current beef/problem is that I placed a support call last week at 10:30
and 10:40AM. At 12:45 they returned my call. It was a critical situation
as I was at a remote vendor's site trying to recover data from a matching
tape/drive. (watch out for those DDS-1 heads going out of alignment).

When I get back to the office that night, I have a bill for $2800 for
support.....

Speaking from experience with ORBiT, they hit us for $30,000 in upgrade fees
going
from a 987/200SX box to a 979KS400 box. We dropped the product and now use
HP TurboStore True Online 7x24. We had purchased ORBiT to accommodate our
DLT4000 backup unit, but we can use TurboStore with it (on 5.5pp7 with a
supplemental patch installed) now, which was not available on 5.5pp5. Works
well
and we don't have the extra costs. We now have a DLT7000 and cut our backup
time in half.

Only in the mini/mainframe market can a vendor get away with treating its
purchase price as confidential information.

If they cannot tell me what it will cost to purchase their software, I get
extremely concerned about what they will hit me for come upgrade time, and
generally look elsewere before considering them.

Subject: Orbit software

My company was looking into purchasing a software package called 'Orbit' to
do our backups on, and I was trying to find out what the cost of the package
was. Another programmer and I were evaluating it for our supervisor, but
the company will not give out the price to anyone who is not authorized to
make a purchase. Does anyone know about how much this software package
costs?

Thanks,

Bradley Dean
