Gentle HP 3000 List Members,

Sometime in the near past, someone asked about the DDS-4 drives from HP.
Yesterday I came across an article about the DDS-4 drives in the Feb 22
issue of CRN.

Sony and HP are working on this drive. HP anticipates putting something
out in the 3rd quarter of this year, whilst Sony should be shipping now.
So it's still 4-7 months away. The DDS-4 has a capacity of 20GB native to
40GB compressed. Transfer rate is 2.4MB/s native, 4.8MB/s compressed. It
is also said to be backward read- and write-compatible with DDS-1 through
DDS-3.

The article had more information about the Sony offering than the one from
HP. The Sony drive sports a SCSI 3 Ultra Wide interface (sorry Stan no
IDE,) and a 10MB buffer. They plan to have an LVD interface and an
autoloader by the summer. The price for the Sony drive was quoted at
$1,495.

>From what I can see, the DDS-4 competes with the low-end DLTs, it is 1.5
times the speed of the DDS-3 and 66% faster than the DLT4000.

Kind regards,

Denys. . .
