Go ahead, :RESTORE the data you want.
Assuming there's nothing wrong with the media, and that you have a
compatible tape device on your current machine, the old machine's
full backup tape should be easily readable via RESTORE.
You'll want to be sure that you don't restore any of their files on top
of yours, so you won't want to say "RESTORE ; @[log in to unmask]@"
...indeed, you should use the ";KEEP" keyword, which will prevent old files
from being restored over new files even if you make a mistake.
If the files the user is interested in are in an account with the same name
as an existing account on your machine (say, SALES), I'd do:
:restore ; @[log in to unmask]; account = sales2; create; keep; olddate; show=offline
BTW, he wasn't on an MPE version called "4.3" ... there wasn't one.
If he was on 4.5 or later, then the ";create" has the potential for creating
users and accounts *outside* the SALES2 (or whatever) account ... you'll want
to watch for that (perhaps by looking at the spoolfile generated by
"show=offline") and delete any such accounts after restoring the files.
Hmm...or, say "; creator=mgr.sales2", which should prevent the problem :)
