HP says it can:
  "Read-write backward compatibility with DDS, DDS-DC, and DDS-2
enables you to continue using existing archive tapes."
Found at http://www.hp.com/tape/datasheets/dat24.html, about 1/3 of
the way down.

This is no different than "can your 7979 read tapes written on your
7980?" Only if you remember to tell the drive to write in the older
format.
