It's the same here on the Ohio/Pennsylvania border. There is a PA
beverage store just over the state line that sells beer and such a lot
cheaper than the corresponding stores in Ohio. Lots of people have
been "nailed" by liquor control "cops" who wait just inside the Ohio
border, but where they can watch people loading the booze into their
vehicles and crossing into Ohio with "untaxed" liquor. And it doesn't
matter that they paid the PA tax. You have to pay the Ohio tax or it's
considered contraband.
Oh, and county cops within Ohio are just as bad. I was stopped for
running a stop sign about two miles from my home, but in another
county, and the Sheriff confiscated my driver's license as "bond"
that I would show up in court. When I protested, he threatened to
to arrest me, take me to a local magistrate, and force me to post
a monetary bond! Just for a minor misdemeanor traffic violation!
And he told me the reason was that I was from outside the county.
Go figure.
