I recall getting confused between "Secure FTP" and "Socks (enabled) FTP". I also recall finding folks calling both "sftp" and that making it that much harder to figure out. I needed to know the difference for about 5 minutes one day and have really forgotten details, BUT IIRC later is the port redirection version which can be used to "securely" go outside the firewall via a socks proxy server.
Hopefully just knowing that there are different version out there will save someone a few minutes. . .
