: 1. How does one know what AIF stuff is available?

Datasheets are available, if you have access to a live salesperson.
(I don't have one, or I'd offer to send or post a copy). I can
also try to look up any specific functionality you're interested
in to see if it appears to be provided.

There are three products in the AIF 'family': The AIF:OS product
(Operating System) is the one most people think of when AIFs are
mentioned. Interfaces to areas such as job & process management,
the spooler, etc. The AIF:MI is access to the measurement
interface, and is of interest primarily (only?) to those writing
performance measurement tools. AIF:PE, Procedure Exits, provides
capabilities to intercept calls to MPE, subsystem, or other
interfaces.

: 2. Are AIF instrinsics on every HP system so I can distribute
: an application to a target system without worry?

For OS & PE, yes. For the MI tool, I believe there is an RL
you are responsible for binding into your application and
distributing.

: 3. Do I have to buy a developers kit to learn how to call these
: AIF routines?

Yes. The AIF:OS is pretty cheap (originally $2150, don't know if
this is still the going price). I think the MI and PE products
are $10K each (again, that was the original price; I don't know
if they have changed).

: 4. Assuming 3 is yes, is it technically possible to call the
: AIF routines without having such a kit if you happened to know
: the calling parameters?

Well, this is like asking if it's technically possible to watch
HBO without paying the monthly fee. I'm sure that with sufficient
effort, it could be done. Then, one day you'll be driving to work,
and there on the corner will be an AIF engineer with a "Will program
for food" sign. You may even be subjected to Sally Struthers
whining about the plight of these hapless engineers. It's not
worth it.

: Please enlighten me folks. A little knowledge is very dangerous
: and I would like to get less dangerous. TIA.
