May I suggest that you point your browser to Robelle's web site
(specifically to the history of the Classic 3000) for starters:

        http://www.robelle.com/library/smugbook/classic.html

It may not be a complete history, but it is concise and gives a very
good description of what has happened to the 3K through the early
years.

Other possibilities are:

        http://www.3k.com/papers/hp3000_history.html
        http://www.ses.hp.com/dtf/bkgnd/mpfnotes/sld001.htm
