Our UNIX firewall was soaking up 250,000 hits in two hours last week.

Nothing got through, but we couldn't get out to do some of regular work
using FTP to get files off-site; it also played havoc with our law
enforcement network services where they had to go off-site as well.

We were grateful that our firewall was UNIX and not NT or Windows 2000
based.

The firewall didn't let the hits get through, but it would go out and try
to validate the transaction for security and just got buried.

We were completely safe on the Intranet in spite of the activity occuring
outside.
