Martin,

If the laserjet is connected when you install Windows 95, the install wizard
recognises the printer and loads the appropriate drivers from the CD-ROM (or
floppies if anyone uses thoses). If you have a newer laserjet like the 5L or
5P series, the drivers will not be on the CD. You must download the drivers
from the HP site, start at www.hp.com and drill down into the software or
support areas. You will find the drivers there. I have extracted them and
installed them, they work as advertised.

Your problem though, may be deeper. Windows 95 uses a different method of
creating spool files than Windows 3.x. Go to your control panel, click on
Printers, then click on the specific printer icon using the right mouse
button. Select the Detail Tab, the click on spool settings... In there you
will find the spool data format probably set to EMF (metafile). Click on the
down arrow and you will see the other choice: RAW. Enable RAW and then apply
the setting. You may need to restart the system.

This will most probably take care of your problem, though it will slow down
the spooling to that device. I suggest that you create another printer using
the printer wizard and set that printer spooling as RAW and leave your actual
one as EMF. When you want to spool to the UNIX box, send it to the RAW
spooled device, otherwise, send it to the regular printer.

Also to accelerate return to the app during printing, look at the top button
on that same page and make sure the first two buttons are on.

One last thing, I added 1 meg to my Laserjet 4L some time in the past. I
told Windows 95 about by going to the Device Options tab in the laserjet 4L
properties. By default, Win95 thinks you only have a meg in there and will
not take advantage of the other meg. You need to do this for all the
printers to which you may have added memory above the default.

The Paper tab is more important when I send stuff to my Deskjet 660c (for
which I had to download the drivers for Win95 from the HP website). When I
use expensive paper ($1/sheet), I instruct Windows95 to tell the driver.

Kind regards,

Denys. . .
