Are you looking at X12 835 (remittance) files?  If so, you may find
the free program PCPRINT useful.  It is likely available from your
Medicare Fiscal Intermediary or you can find it via Google search.

In general, X12 files don't lend themselves to "simple" conversion to
flat files.  They are quite hierarchical.  They're not really
difficult to parse though.  Get the implementation guides from
Washington Publishing (www.wpc-edi.com) if you need to interpret what
you're seeing.

I've written some COBOL here to process our 835s and post payment
transactions to our HBOC/McKesson patient accounting system.  I'd be
happy to work with you offline to answer questions you might have.
