: We've just installed MPE/ix 5.0 and have some questions on networking PC's

: but its difficult to put it all together and into perspective.

: Given the following:
: HP3000 947 running MPE/ix 5.0

- You have all you need on the HP3000 to have connectivity from the PC.
As of 5.0 all the needed goodies are bundled in the OS. You have LAN
and TCP/IP transport, FTP and incoming NS/VT service (amongst other things).

Of those LAN and TCP/IP gives you the standard transport used in IP networks
including ethernet and IEEE802.2 LANs - BSD and NetIPC API's on the top.

FTP gives you file transfer capabilities between the PC's and the HP3000,

and finally, incoming NS/VT allows the PC's to logon to the HP3000 using
NS/VT under reflections (I think they call it Connection/3000 software at
WRQ) - btw, that gives you another choise for file transfers over VT.

: Zenith 486/33 pc's, 8mb, running MS Windows for Workgroups 3.11
: Asanti Ethernet hubs
: 3-Com Etherlink 3 ethernet cards
: Connecting to a Appleshare File Server using Appleshare Client for Windows
: WRQ Reflection 1 for Windows 4.21

  - This WRQ package may not include the needed Connection/3000 piece, which
you may need to get from WRQ. Check with your WRQ and/or your local PC
specialist whether the PC's have all required stuff for VT connection to
    an HP3000.

: We want to use the existing network card to access the HP instead of
: having to run another wire from the DTC to the PC's.

 - You can use the existing ethernet cabling. NS/VT and FTP both run over
standard TCP/IP using either IEEE802.2 or ethernet protocol, depending
how you want your system configured.

: Our current HP applications are HP OpenDesk Manager, Bi-Tech Accounting,
: in-house student scheduling, grading, attendance, discipline, etc...
: These applications are a mix of COBOL character and block mode (Vplus
: screens) programs.

  - That'll all run just fine over NS/VT.

: What additional hardware and software do we need on each PC and what would
: be the approximate cost?

  - I assume you'll need the Connection/3000 for NS/VT connection to HP3000
from WRQ. Don't know the cost, sorry.

: What additional hardware and software do we need on the HP and what would
: be approximate cost?

  - None.

: Would the solution be different knowing that we want to access our
: Image/SQL databases using Visual Basic, Foxpro, Excel, etc... under
: ODBC in the future?

  - No, I don't think so (although I'm no specialist in this area...), sure
I'll get corrected by the net if I'm wrong. I assume that all the ODBC
stuff runs over TCP/IP as well - if not, *THE WISDOM* of the net, please
correct me and I'll stand corrected.

: I realize that this is a pretty tall order to ask of "volunteers" but I
: would be willing to put together something from the responses that could
: be added to the faq.

  - I think that all sounds pretty common, standard type of thing most
HP3000 shops are doing. I don't see any major problems on your way.
Once you get those missing pieces on your PC's and the configurations
have been done on both the 3000 and PC's, you should be up and running.

Hope this helps,
