I remember the answer to 23 as 64 squares on a checkerboard, but I couldn't
remember the answer to #18 -- the internet & google to the rescue, searching
for the EXACT phrase
"5 = D in a Z C"
[the quotes are necessary here]
revealed this as link #1:
http://www.puzzledepot.com/trivia/trivia01.shtml
where the answer is revealed to be "5 = digits in a zip code"
There were also a number of other intriguing links, most of which contained
either this list or a very similar list with about 34+ items, ending with
"15 = M on a D M C" [men on a dead man's chest]
Puzzle #3 from http://www.druddy.freeserve.co.uk/pages/puzzle.htm contains a
few I've heard before, and a couple of VERY suggestive ones I hadn't heard
[but got a kick out of the "correct" answer... ;) ]
At http://www.tdl.com/~kitty/wordequate.html there is a "fill-in-the-blank"
version of this that will "score" you on your performance -- only 26 in this
list, however
Rounding out the first page of google hits is
http://www.trusslane.com/solve.htm which contains several examples of
questions based on "literal interpretation" [for instance, "what word is
always spelled incorrectly?" answer: incorrectly! <groan>]
