Oh and by the way, the control-right-click thing does not work. My expert Windows technicians are the ones who can't fix it, not a good guesser like me. If they aren't aware of the control-right-click technique, then my IT dept has other issues.

I didn't say the version of O/S because I couldn't be sure either. But these are all new installations, so I suspect it is higher than Windows 7 (probably 8) with Office 2010.

I am not sure which version of Windows you are running, as you fail to
mention it, but if you want to change file associations in Windows 7, you
can Ctrl - Right Click any file with the .DBF extension and select 'Open
With" and "Choose Default Program".

Our HP3000 still generates dBase ][ DBF files that users can download and
open with Excel.

A few of our users upgraded to Office 2010 or Windows something and the file
association for DBF to Excel had to be reestablished.

It seems by default, if you attempt to "open" it without associating it to
Excel properly first, it defaults to opening the file with Adobe Acrobat and
then it associates the file to PDF forever. It would take a Windows expert
to undo it, apparently.

The old ways of disassociating and reestablishing a file association no
longer work apparently.
