As more people at 3M start using ODBC with IMAGE/SQL, we are having problems
supporting them as they don't understand how PC networking works. They have
no problems with the initial installation but they get lost fast when it
doesn't work.
I realize that this might be a common problem as many of us don't understand
the networking software that is in the PC/LAN/Server setup. We currently use
W4WG with Reflections TCP/IP sofware for IMAGE/SQL and ALLBASE/SQL.
As a DBA, I don't have the opportunity to delve very deeply into the
application side. However, I still get involved in troubleshooting in order
to prove whether the problem is with the database or application or DBMS
software or operating system or network.
Does anyone have any suggestions for education? We need to cover two areas:
1. Basic concepts of PC networking so that those who need support can
at least speak the technobable.
2. PC network troubleshooting that would include the use of tools for
pinpointing the cause.
Thanks in advance for your help.
