Cecil,

Ran a quick check.  All it does is force line wrapping at the specified column (default of 80).  In other words if you have a file with a record length of 100 characters and you fold it (without the -w option) you will get an output that has the first 80 characters of the first input record in the first output record, the next 20 characters of the first input record in the second output record, and so forth.
