I got dinged for "extra income" that I had to take out of my VIP to give to my ex during the divorce.  IRS didn't understand "I DIDN'T EARN AN EXTRA $20,000!!!".

Yes, people forget, if your debt is ever written off, it is counted as income.  

There was an old IT recruiter in Manhattan Beach, told me a similar story about his apartment building about 15 years ago.
