Ah, yes, the famous "Standard Oil" breakup. Of course, it's seldom reported
that before the Standard Oil "monopoly" was broken up (at the instigation of
a group of competitors), they were already steadily losing market share to
smaller, more efficient companies.
The AT&T federally protected monopoly was *created* by government
intervention in private business -- competition was *outlawed*. Microsoft
never had such an advantage.
