There has been widespread discussion on the decline of applications
for the 3k, as well as major vendors opting to support a limited
set of platforms, mostly unix based. This of course is not good
news for the 3k. Forget the 3k, long live unix sayeth the market.
One of the vendors used as a reference point is SAP. They had an
early port to the 3k which was abandoned in favor of more 'mainstream'
platforms, like hp-ux and other flavors of unix.
Well, the winds of change are upon us. SAP has announced a fourth layer
in its R/3 product called "Internet Transaction Server". For the first
time in its history, SAP will NOT make a feature available on
all platforms. This feature will only be available on NT (IIS). And the
reason, as stated by SAP vice chairman Hasso Plattner, is because
the world is headed toward NT.
Statistics from SAP:
1/3 of their R/3 installed base (6,000) is on NT.
NT is scheduled for 38% of all new installations.
Interesting information, I'd say...
