Wirt, I believe that you at least needed a WARMSTART after this surgery.  Sinc
e you pulled and replaced the batteries, the system did not stay in powerfail
mode.
 
Your exemplary record with the HP3000 is probably due to clean living.  I, on
the other hand have a long history of hardware and software problems with the
HP3000.  This is due to the fact I spent most of my professional life on the
HP3000 in front of the bleeding edge.  Once the systems had stabilized, they
were indeed resilient and still continue to be.
