Stephen, my friend who had this problem, thanks all of you who responded
(as do I). He is really jazzed about the prompt response that's possible
over internet, and is now really motivated to get 'wired'. He made the
comment that this list is like having free consulting.  I hadn't thought of
it that way before, but it's true. In addition, the list allows for the
'mastermind' concept to flourish.  No one person had exactly the correct
answer; our final solution incorporated pieces from several of the
responses.
 
The two main issues were these: 1) data item definitions for the intrinsics
have changed since CM, and 2) his program actually is a sub-program, and
therefore needed an XL created in linkedit first, before loading the
sub-program into it.
