That's pretty much the way I read the doc, too, however the data sheet on the printer has MPE/iX as the last O/S supported under the list so I thought perhaps someone had gotten to work.
 
Thought maybe there was a special program_file= option or some such that I couldn't find documented.
 
I appreciate the response...

The technical specs for 'Printer language' says 'Host-based'...

From my experience this is HP-speak for:

'The printer has no on-board personality and requires printer drivers
from the host (PC or Server) to make the printer work.'

I would be exremely surprised if you ever got this printer to work
directly from an MPE system.
