Howdy,

More notes on the transition from 3k to 9k.

So Tuesday 6/3/97 we plugged in the K460. Makes more noise than
a rooster in a hen house. Pretty though. Kinda reminds me of my
ex-wife, pretty but noisy :-)

So the next morning we started foolin' with it. Just about the first thing
we did was invoke SAM (system administrative manager or some such).
Yep, it crashed because it didn't like the Nike disc array :-(

Call HPRC? Sure but what's yer system handle. Call sales rep --> call
contracts dept --> call Federal contracts --> call someone else at Fed
contracts --> call someone in Sacramento --> call Fed contracts again
--> call someone else at Fed contracts....YeeeeHaaa....bingo...
eureka got a system handle. Only took most of the day, which is okay
because I like you have nothing else to do with my time.

Thursday. Call HPRC: I'm sorry sir but I can't find that system handle.
<snip some  (2hrs) of dialog>
download the appropriate patches from the Net (remember this is a brand
new machine which came pre-configured....HP calls it Instant Ignition.
I call it Reasonably Instant Crash.

Go to back it up prior to applying the patches and the stinkin' thing tells
us the tape is full. Hmmm, quite odd as it's a brand new tape.
<snip a lot of %%$#**@ (3hrs)>
finally got the syntax figured out. The output device specification is
different for external devices as opposed to internal. SAM will take care
of that for you but yeah, you noticed what it was we were trying to patch.

Onward. Now we've got our backup. RTFM (very, very, carfully) and
begin the patch install. Now we find that although we have nothing on
the system yet except the operating system that all 52 gigabytes of
disc are full :-(( Haven't resolved that yet, but I'm tired of this already.

Oh yeah, last but not least. Part of the bundle is a backup product
called OmniBack (don't lose it Denys. We'll be looking at your product
for the '98 budget). I gotta enter a password which, obviously with some
caracters changed but the same pattern, is:

670985ac8b34.02.0f.02.71.2b.00.00.00 7ugjjvj3p8yfdpabsavatb
2"OMNIBACK TEMP 29 OCT 1997 250 B 2500 C""A.01"

I beg yer pardon! Get real. Get a life. Get outta Dodge.

My 5 pesos worth.

Oh yeah 'fore I forget......the 3k is watching all this and I keep hearing
the sounds of distant laughter.

Regards,
