Subject: why pay software support?
We have 2 HP3000s, which are
937SX 64user 6.0pp2,Image,Cobol,NS,BasicLineSupport $2976, now 2b $4524/yr
(why the huge increase?), broken down as
36385B UA9 64user $564
H2002A 437 BscLin $2412
957LX 64user 6.0pp2,Image,Cobol,NS,BasicLineSupport $11,400(!)/yr broken
down as
36385B UA9 64user $1164
H2002A 0NQ BscLin $3744
36920B NS3k $504
H2004A 0NQ UpdMtl $600
H2071A AAH DDScart $204
H5358A 0NQ ???????$4548 (is some of this redundant?)
I understand I could go to 6.5 just to stay as current as possible, but I've
found no other reason. I've already upgraded away from HP-IB devices, but
don't need the increased capacities offered by 6.5, and 7.0 won't even run
on this hardware.
Since our software support agreements with HP are up for renewal, it's time
for the hard questions:
1) Are any of the items on the HP Software Support Agreement REQUIRED for
continued operation and/or future sale of these machines?
2) I'm now being offered 3rd-party software support (yes, the vendor is here
on the -L; I need 4th-party answers to these of course!) for "less than
half" of my HP costs, but do I need it at all?
3) If I DO want to stay with HP software support for one of these machines,
does it have to be the bigger one? (I realize of course that if an update I
want actually comes along, I'll have to pay penalties to resume either
contract).
4) What will I lose if I drop HP SW support entirely, other than $'d items
on the ITRC web pages?
Other recommendations?
You folks have been the best HP3000 resource I've ever found. I don't
particularly like the idea of blowing HP off when CSY is now more active
than ever in the past, but I'm sure having trouble justifying pouring $ down
a drain. Help?
