Welcome to the world of DAT Drives :)
I went through about a 2 week span where 90% of my tapes
were giving the same message apx. 3 months ago.

I assume you use the DDS1-60M or DDS2-90M like I use.

But if I were to do a STORE of a single file on them, unload the tape, then put it back in the drive
the VOL (UNLABELLED) in LDEV 8 would come on like I expected. And I could do a store or restore from
them. But if I tried to do a restore w/o doing a store first I was not able to do so just like you
mention.

Turns out that my tape drive needed to be replaced as the read/write head was partially scratched.
Not bad enough to not work....but just bad enough so that a tape that was used as a STORE a few
weeks ago could not be read from but was able to be stored, unloaded and then able to read the
header after re-inserting the tape.

Once I cycled through my backup tapes once....I have not seen this message again.

Just wanted to put my 2 cents in......

Did you try this plan of action???
