Hello Friends:

Paul Ackley of United McGill Corp.asked, "What happened to the Netscape Web
Server that was supposed to be with MPE/iX 6.0?"

Netscape's FastTrack will not ship for HP 3000s, despite being at a
demo-ready version last summer. HP will be leveraging some of its
engineering work from that port to deliver LDAP services. HP appears to be
ready to back away from that difficult FastTrack port to adopt software
that comes from Open Source methods -- where nobody owns the code, and so
it can't be discontinued (like what happened to HP's last 3000 Web Server,
from Open Market).

As an Open Market customer -- our NewsWire Web site is served off the OM
software on a 3000 for the moment, until our technology partner 3k
Associates completes the port to Apache/iX -- we think this is a good
policy. With all the turmoil in the Internet market, no single supplier of
a Web solution could be counted upon to maintain code through an
acquisition. Netscape, being acquired by AOL, certainly wasn't immune to
being taken over. Open Source products, like Samba, eliminate this
potential for disruption.
