I just reread my post, and am embarrassed by the nonsensical statement that

read "supporters of the merger are 'probably in the majority.'"  Mea culpa.

What I find most irritating about this story is the Compaq user group
president saying that HP3000 users are a vocal minority and that the
majority of members are "probably in the majority."  It seems he has missed
the point of the complaints as completely as the Interex board has.  Whether
a majority of members is in favor of the merger is immaterial.  The problem
is that the board presumes to speak for its members without first soliciting
their opinions.  The point is that they really don't know what the
membership's opinions are.  Geez, how dense can some people be?
