Jeff Vance apparently sent the following reply only to me privately. But, as
I clearly didn't know the answer, I'll break netiquette and repost his answer
below, in case anyone else didn't know either. The bottom line is that it's
quite possible to FTP directly to your HP3000 if you want to. Although it
took me a little while to find it, also included below is the relevant
section of the HPESC web page.

I suspect that this is going to become an increasingly popular option as time
goes on.

Hi Wirt,

Here is a reply from Mike Dovano. Also, as already noted, there are some
customers who cannot use FTP to get outside of their firewall. In fact,
this is the case at HP and I have to used socksified ftp to push files
onto Jazz.

Jeff:

We do give the customers the option of anonymous ftp'ing to the support site
to download the patches. In this way they can pull the patch file directly
to their MPE system without the PC/browser interface. From there they just
run UNPACKP and it's ready to install.

Steps to copy UNPACKP and patches to your HP3000 system using Anonymous FTP:

Another alternative that may be available to you to download patches is using
anonymous FTP. The anonymous FTP method allows you to download patches and
the UNPACKP command file directly to your HP3000, without using the Web
browser. In order to use anonymous FTP to directly download the patch, your
HP3000 system must be connected to the Internet.

The following shows an example of downloading the UNPACKP command file and a
patch file for MPE/iX release 5.5 directly to an HP3000 host. To start, make
sure you are logged on as MANAGER.SYS,INSTALL. Note that when FTP prompts for
a password, you should enter your e-mail address. Also note that patches for
a particular release reside in their own directory, i.e.
mpe-ix_patches/c.50.00 for release 5.0, and mpe-ix_patches/c.55.00 for
release 5.5.

:ftp.arpa.sys us-ffs.external.hp.com
...
Name(manager): anonymous
331 Guest login ok, send your complete e-mail address as password.
Password: <your e-mail address>
ftp> cd export/bin
ftp> binary
ftp> get unpackp UNPACKPB
...
226 Transfer complete.
ftp> cd ../..
ftp> cd mpe-ix_patches/c.55.00
250 CWD command successful.
ftp> binary
ftp> get MPEJX87A
...
226 Transfer complete
ftp> bye

You can obtain as many patches as you want by entering multiple "get"
commands.

If you downloaded UNPACKPB, you must convert it to a bytestream file to allow
it to be executed as a CI command file. Still logged on as
MANAGER.SYS,INSTALL, use the MPE/iX Shell tobyte command to convert the file.
From the CI prompt, simply do the following:

:tobyte.hpbin.sys "UNPACKPB UNPACKP"
Now purge UNPACKPB:

:purge UNPACKPB

UNPACKP can now be used to unpack patch files. To complete installation of
the patches, follow the instructions below.
