Hi Connie,

FTP by default uses port 21 for the control channel and port 20 for the data channel. Passive
Mode comes into play after you are logged in and at the first command that actually
Transfers data (an ls or dir command, a put or get, etc).

In passive mode the server will send a PORT command Which contains the IP address and port to
open for the data connection. The first 4 numbers in The port command are the IP address and the
next 2 are the port. The first number of the port Is multiplied by 256 and then the second number
is added to that to get the actual port number. Then the client will open a connection to the IP address
and port for the data transfers.

If you are unable to make the initial connection on port 21 then I would suspect firewall
Or other networking on either your end or the remote end. Have you checked with the remote
site to determine if they have made Any changes, like changing to a non-standard port or implementing
an allowed IP address list? With Filezilla it can be difficult to determine the order things are done.

You could try an ftp to speedtest.tele2.net to see if you can make the initial connection. If you cannot make
That connection then there is a firewall on your end blocking port 21...

Here is a site with a pretty good explanation of active versus passive ftp:

Subject: [HP3000-L] FTP Passive fails - any way to specify Active?

Hello List,

I've always assumed that the command-line FTP on an HP3000 would only support Passive FTP connections. The 'passive on' or 'passive off' are, according to FTP's Help, supposed to set Passive or Active. However, to set the 'Active' state, you first have to have a connection, and my Open command is failing before I even get to log in.

I suspect the remote site has recently changed to require Active, since this job has worked for several years.
I tried connecting with FileZilla on my PC, and the 'Active' or 'Default' setting works but 'Passive' fails.

Any possible way to get the HP to use 'Active' from the command line/Job?

Thank you in advance,
Connie Sellitto
