A basic explanation is that a hub causes a lot more network traffic since it
broadcasts every packet out every port.  A switch keeps a table listing what
MAC addresses are connected to each port and will send a packet only out the
port that the destination is attached to.

Less network traffic = better network response times.  That or they went
from a 100Mb switch to a 10Mb hub :-)

Okay, I'll ask the question:  What is it about a switch that causes it to
transfer data faster than a hub?
