I thought I'd let everyone know that while the 7974 is out of service, the
7980 is back in service, the classic system is back up, both the iX and
Classic systems have been backed up, and the site is happy. Thanks
HP3000-L! You came through again!

I'd like everyone to know that I really appreciate your help. The response
(and only a fraction of it was posted to the list, most was private) was
truly amazing.

I do need to make one comment. It pertains to humor. I found it hard to
believe the number of people (over a dozen) who sent virtually the same
humorous post, all saying something to the effect - "Wow! A Gooey interface
for the HP3000!" or "Finally! A Gooey interface for the HP3000!",
referring, of course, to the capstan on the 7974. I guess the similarity
of the posts lends credence to the old saw about great minds thinking in
the same direction. Anyway, the humor did lighten up some tense moments
and I appreciate being in all your thoughts.

Some may remember my saying that this episode with the 7974 (gooey, not
GUI) raised my concern for a 7974 I have stored in my basement (and seldom
used). Well, I checked it out tonight and its capstan seems to be starting
to deteriorate - not bad, but it is getting a little sticky to the touch.
So, I guess I'm soon going to have to get my drive's capstan replaced
before it also becomes a "gooey interface".

And with that, I'm off to try to get some sleep.

Again, thanks to all who emailed, FAXed, mailed, etc. I really appreciate
your help. Once again, the HP3000-L comes through!

Sincerely,

John
