As an employee of an educational institution, I will say that I was not
offended by your comment, although I was surprised by it.  Any University
user who only has uu[en|de]code access because "that's what's free" hasn't
looked at many public file archives recently.  MIME is available for free
for most platforms, especially Unix where it can be integrated into elm or
pine.  I actually use Eudora (which is available in free and commercial
versions) as my mail client, and it natively supports MIME, uu, and binhex
quite transparently, thank you very much.
 
Let's not let this devolve into another stupid flame-war ala mac/pc,
mpe/unix, and now uu/mime.  MIME was developed to be broader in scope than
previous schemes, and there are applications where MIME is the obvious
choice over uu[e|d], and probably vice versa.  It's the same old story:  you
use what works.
