This is one of those...it depends....types of questions.

If the database is local to you then there really is no impact
in access performance.  There may be a slight impact when the
base/set is initially opened but you really shouldn't see
anything.  Once opened, the file equation no longer matters
to the access of the actual files.

However, if the database is on a remote system and you're using
a file equation to access the file across a connection, then your
access will be constrained by the performance of the network/connection.
Even in this case the file equation is not the issue.

There are lots of other issues which may be impacting performance
when accessing a database, but using a file equation isn't one
of them.
