I have an internal modem on a 989-400 that does not pick up.  The phone line
rings just fine.  It there a way to reset the modem.

Check from the console the modem is not locked :

enter CTRL+B on the console and look at the status line ... try the help
command to know how to enable the modem with or without enabling the remote
console (sorry, no HP3000 at home ;-) )
