For sure! We just had a national election and nothing changed.

Now, since we were the inventors of the telephone (Graham Bell's homestead
is within an hours drive of my house), I guess we get first dibbs on
country code=1

The United States of America should feel free to obtain a new country code,
the new code would be tranparent for all dialing within the country and you
would get the additional room that the current Canadian area codes use.
