How did the "contributors" of these messages become authorized to post
them? "Harvesting" the name of the list doesn't accomplish much: the
list only accepts postings from subscribers, and subscription requests
must be approved by the owner. Or has something changed?

The last sentence ("Now granted....") is inconsistent: since
eliminating the gateway would by definition mean that the spammers
were unable to "harvest" list-related info from a (now non-gatewayed)
newsgroup, stopping the gateway would, in fact, eliminate that
component of the source.
