The battles for mindshare that feature MPE, MacOS, Unix, NT, etc., are
nothing compared to the battles for mindshare in other industries. Here is
a news report that came through my desk today:
------------------------------------------------
ADOBE, APPLE, NETSCAPE BRING PS, TRUETYPE ONLINE
Three leading technology vendors have banded together to improve online
font display. Adobe, Apple and Netscape announced on Monday that they
will collaborate on proposed HTML extensions covering the use of type on
the Web. The proposal is expected to enable the use of PostScript Type 1
and TrueType fonts in HTML; font usage in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) files will
also be addressed.
Among the benefits ascribed to the new technologies are better screen
display through anti-aliasing; faster document downloading through font
compression; progressive rendering of fonts; and embedding of only the
characters actually used in a document.
Already under development for Adobe's Acrobat Amber plug-in for Netscape
Navigator, this font technology represents a strong challenge to
Bitstream's TrueDoc, which has gained wide use in Web publishing
applications. However, it is also a preemptive strike against Microsoft,
which is widely expected to propose HTML extensions covering font usage
(and other areas).
This announcement could mark the emergence of Apple as a member of the
anti-Microsoft camp in the standards-setting wars. Observers who fear
Microsoft's hegemony have long wondered why Apple had remained
uninvolved; now, Bill Gates's forces, who were already battling a
formidable new foe in Netscape, face the prospect of additional heavy
artillery lined up against them.

Are people banding together now, getting their camps ready for the upcoming
IPROF meeting of HP3000 faithful?
Typographically yours,
